Fuel Injector Balance: Why a Matched Set Matters

Most engines don't fuel each cylinder individually based on what that cylinder needs. The engine computer sends the same pulse width to every injector on a bank and trims the whole bank using the oxygen sensor. That works perfectly — as long as every injector delivers the same amount of fuel for the same pulse.

What happens when the set isn't balanced

Say one injector in a six-cylinder set flows 8% less than the others. The O2 sensor sees the average of the bank, so the computer adds a little fuel to everything. Now five cylinders run slightly rich and one still runs lean. You get:

  • A rough idle that's hard to pin down
  • Misfires or detonation on the lean cylinder under load
  • Fuel trims that look “a bit off” without an obvious cause
  • Worse fuel economy from the rich cylinders

On a stock engine that's annoying. On a boosted or E85 engine running close to its limits, a lean cylinder is how pistons get damaged.

Why sets drift apart

  • Deposits never build evenly — injectors near hotter cylinders or at the end of a rail can foul faster.
  • Wear differs injector to injector over a long life.
  • Mixing injectors from different sets or batches, especially used ones.

What balance looks like on a flow sheet

Look at the highest and lowest flow numbers in the set and how far apart they are. A tight spread means every cylinder gets close to the same fuel. One injector sitting well below the rest is the one to watch. If you added before-cleaning numbers, compare the spread before and after: a good cleaning usually pulls a drifting set back together. How to get a balanced set

  1. Clean and test what you have. Ultrasonic cleaning plus a flow test is $15 per injector at our Surrey shop, with a printed flow sheet showing the balance across the set.
  2. Replace only the outlier. If one injector won't come back in line, swap it for a matching single injector of the same part number.
  3. Upgrading? Buy a matched set. Many performance brands sell injectors as flow-matched sets — browse 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder sets.

Pricing

$15 per injector (ultrasonic cleaning + flow test after cleaning). Before numbers, reverse flush, and GDI or diesel are +$5 per injector each. Typical turnaround is 1–2 hours at 19320 65 Ave #214, Surrey. Book your cleaning.
