When diesel injectors need attention
Diesel injectors work under far higher pressure than gas port injectors, and small amounts of deposit or wear change how they deliver fuel. Common signs:
- Rough idle or a knock that wasn't there before
- Excess smoke — white on startup or black under load
- Hard starting, especially when cold
- Loss of power or poor fuel economy
- Fuel smell, or fuel in the oil
These can also come from glow plugs, low-pressure fuel supply, filters or the injection pump. Cleaning and testing the injectors first tells you whether they're the cause before you spend on a full new set.
Cleaning vs. rebuilding vs. replacing
