Ask five mechanics how often fuel injectors should be cleaned and you'll hear five answers — every 30,000 km, every 50,000, every 100,000, or “only when there's a problem.” The honest answer is that mileage alone doesn't decide it. How your injectors age depends on the fuel you run, how you drive and what kind of injection your engine uses.
What makes injectors dirty faster
- Short trips. Engines that rarely reach full temperature build deposits faster than ones that do long highway runs.
- Heat soak. After shutdown, heat from the engine bakes the fuel left in the injector tip. Lots of short stop-start driving means lots of heat-soak cycles.
- Fuel that sits. Trucks, project cars, boats and seasonal equipment that sit for months leave fuel to go stale and varnish in the filter basket and tip.
- Direct injection. GDI injectors sit inside the combustion chamber, so their tips see combustion carbon that port injectors never do.
- Age and kilometres. Over a long life, even well-maintained injectors collect deposits and wear.
A practical rule of thumb
| Situation | When to have them cleaned and tested |
|---|---|
| Daily driver, no symptoms | No need on a schedule — consider it at high kilometres or when other fuel-system work is being done |
| Rough idle, misfire, lean codes, worse mileage | Now — before replacing parts |
| Vehicle or equipment that sat for a season or longer | Before you rely on it again |
| Used injectors for a swap or build | Before installation, every time |
| Injectors already out of the engine for other work | While they're out — it's cheap insurance |
Signs it's time
Rough or unstable idle, misfire codes, lean codes or high fuel trims, hesitation under load, hard starting, a fuel smell and a sudden drop in fuel economy are the common ones. We cover each in 8 signs of dirty or clogged fuel injectors.
Don't clean on a calendar — measure
The trouble with a mileage schedule is that it either cleans injectors that didn't need it or misses ones that did. A flow test gives you an answer instead of a guess. At Budget Injector, every cleaning includes a flow test after cleaning, and you can add before-cleaning numbers (+$5 per injector) to see how far off the set was to begin with.
What about additives?
A quality fuel-system cleaner in the tank now and then is reasonable maintenance and can slow deposit build-up. It won't clear a heavily varnished filter basket or tell you whether each injector flows correctly. Read ultrasonic cleaning vs. fuel injector cleaner for the full comparison.
Cost of checking
$15 per injector for ultrasonic cleaning and a flow test — $60 for a 4-cylinder set. GDI or diesel is +$5 per injector. Typical turnaround is 1–2 hours at our shop at 19320 65 Ave #214, Surrey. Book your cleaning.
